Conference Description

On May 12th – 15th 2008, TIGRA will host the Transnational Assembly of the Global League of Community Sustainers or La Liga. This historic gathering will bring together migrant leaders and local, state, national and international migrant organizations from the US and Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America to build a global association of remitters and their families.  The mission of La Liga is to consolidate the economic and political power of an important constituency in the age of globalization—those who have moved from their countries of origin in order to provide financially for their families. The Transnational Assembly seeks to build a dynamic association and platform that can give shape to a strategic agenda to influence the development of migrant communities towards a more sustainable future.

Expected attendance is estimated at 200-250 delegates, representing 66 cities in the United States and 30 countries worldwide. More than $300 billion dollars will be sent home this year from migrant workers. This is more than three times the total amount of development aid from all governments and has more impact on poverty than the trade of goods. Collectively, delegates represent 150,000 migrant families around the world. The Assembly will be held at El Club de Periodistas  (National Press Club) in the heart of Mexico City with the support of Mexico City’s Secretariat for Rural Development and Community Equity.

Organizational Background

TIGRA (Transnational Institute for Grassroots Research and Action) is a movement center for transnational organizing that promotes financial justice through the economic power of immigrants - those who send billions of dollars to families they've left behind. TIGRA considers the system of remittances as the next frontier of economic justice that links domestic and global issues.

Founded in 2005, TIGRA maintains a growing network of more than 180 immigrant organizations in the United States, located in 66 cities in every region.  TIGRA also partners with key migrant networks worldwide, see list below.  TIGRA receives its support from individuals and organizations that believe in its vision and strategies, as well as from philanthropic institutions like the Ford Foundation, New World Foundation, Norman Foundation, Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, and the Rhode Island Foundation.
