Transnational Assembly for Remitters and Families
May 12 - 15, 2008
Call for Workshop Proposals
TIGRA is accepting proposal submissions for our Transnational Assembly that will be held May 12-15, 2008 at the National Press Club in Mexico City, Mexico.
The Transnational Assembly for Remitters and Families is a historic event for grassroots migrant leaders around the world. For the first time, migrant communities will come together in a multi-racial, multi-national alliance to shape a common vision of sustainability for their families through the economic power of their remittances. This is a significant step in uniting migrant voices across borders to speak as one voice on the global political stage.
Before completing your proposal, please visit our website (www.ligaconvention08.org) to familiarize yourself with the goals of the assembly and the range of issues that will be covered. We encourage you to submit your proposal as soon as possible since space for workshops is limited to a total of 32 sessions and cannot be guaranteed. All presenters must register for the Assembly.
NOTE:Due to space limitations we may not be able to accommodate your request or we may ask you to merge your workshop proposal with others if we feel there are duplicate efforts or complementary proposals.
The Assembly is organized around 3 thematic tracks:
 |
Achieve economic security for our communities by redefining globalization to benefit families, by promoting sustainable development of communities of origin, and supporting innovations for creating sustainable economies and international fair trade. Ecological security and social development are integral to economic security. |
 |
Collectivize the power of migrant and home communities around the world to ensure migrant participation in global political spheres as a single constituency, to advocate for community needs and demand changes to policies that exacerbate migration. Propose a resolution of transnational rights that expand citizenship and human rights to include: transnational governance; freedom of human movement; legal status wherever a person resides; and the right to gainful employment everywhere. |
 |
Migrants and their families face different realities in their home and host countries and through their connections, these realities continually influence each other. Recognize the experience of women as a significant force of global providers and assert an evolving transnational identity that continues to transform race,
